Star Wars: Hunters Set to Shut Down in October 2025

The galaxy’s newest battleground will soon fall silent. Star Wars: Hunters, Zynga and NaturalMotion’s squad-based arena shooter, is officially closing its servers on October 1, 2025, marking the end of its live-service life less than a year after launch.

Released for Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, the game entered the market with high hopes. It brought a fresh, competitive twist to the Star Wars universe, offering fans a chance to engage in 4v4 battles with a colorful roster of original characters. Set in the aftermath of the Galactic Empire’s collapse, Hunters placed players into the fast-paced chaos of the Hunter’s Arena, a gladiator-style competition broadcast across the galaxy.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding its launch, sustaining momentum proved to be a challenge. On their official website, Zynga acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, stating:

“We understand this news may be disappointing and we want to assure you that this decision was not made lightly. Your passion and dedication to the game and its community have meant the world to us.”

The developers have pledged to maintain the player experience during the game’s final stretch. Season 5, originally planned to end earlier, will now be extended by three weeks starting March 25, 2025, giving players more time to enjoy new content. Additionally, a final update will roll out on April 15, which will mark the end of content additions and disable all in-game purchases. Any in-game currency players may have remaining will not be eligible for refunds, as noted in the game's FAQ.

What made Star Wars: Hunters unique was its exclusive cast of new characters—a bold departure from the typical reliance on iconic figures like Darth Vader or Yoda. Instead, players got to know characters like Imara Vex, the Mandalorian bounty hunter, and Slingshot, a Jawa piloting a wrecking ball droid. Each hero had their own playstyle and personality, adding depth to the game’s lore and combat strategies.

The arenas themselves were love letters to the Star Wars universe, featuring locales inspired by Tatooine, Endor, and other iconic settings. Paired with a vibrant art style and fast, accessible gameplay, Hunters was positioned as a fun, family-friendly alternative to more serious shooters.

However, the live-service model is notoriously difficult to maintain. Competing with heavyweights like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Overwatch 2 made it difficult for Hunters to carve out a lasting niche. While the gameplay was praised for its charm and accessibility, critics noted a lack of depth and content compared to its rivals. In an increasingly crowded multiplayer landscape, even the power of the Star Wars brand couldn’t guarantee long-term success.

Still, the game’s short run left a lasting impression on a passionate fanbase. Communities sprang up on social media and Discord, where players shared strategies, character builds, and fan art. For many, the shutdown isn’t just about losing a game—it’s about saying goodbye to a digital space where friendships and memories were made.

As Star Wars: Hunters prepares to shut its doors, players are encouraged to jump back in, enjoy the final season, and celebrate the game for what it was: a brief, creative spark in the galaxy, fueled by a love for competition, character, and community.
